Approach
Communicative Competence through Comprehensible Input
I employ a communicative approach, similar to how you learned your first language, to help you start speaking Italian as soon as possible - even from day one! Instead of merely memorizing lists of words and verb tables, we focus on meaningful communication in a low-anxiety environment. My goal is to assess your level and provide Italian input that is slightly above your current competence, gradually increasing the difficulty while staying in the target language. This pedagogical approach is called comprehensible input (i +1, a foundational concept in applied linguistics). While clarifications and grammar explanations in English can be helpful at the beginning and at certain points along the way, the secret to acquiring a language lies in this immersive approach. With consistent practice, your Italian will improve!
Making Input Comprehensible
To supplement our lessons, I can suggest numerous reputable open-access online resources for beginner, intermediate, and advanced students. For those who wish to purchase materials, I recommend resources entirely in Italian that align with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (A1-C2). This framework helps measure your level and guides your advancement in proficiency, with corresponding materials for each stage. It is also a helpful benchmark for those looking to take state-level Italian proficiency exams, such the PLIDA exam, for official uses such as employment, citizenship, etc. I also utilize readers tailored to each level. In addition to the language itself, the discussion of cultural, historic, and linguistic topics that interest you is very important to me.
Private lessons are the best way to maximize your learning experience because you receive personalized input from me, have all your questions answered, and get ample practice time that you wouldn’t typically receive in a classroom setting, allowing you to progress faster. Language acquisition is a unique and enjoyable process for everyone!
